Legend of Little Claus

(As told to Elf Patricia by Santa Claus himself)

S

anta Claus has been around for a long time, a very long time.

Some think that Santa lives forever, and while that is a lovely thought, it's the legend of Santa that lives forever in our hearts; the spirit of unconditional love, the spirit of joy and happiness the spirit of unconditional giving.

So how does Santa endure in his corporal form?  The answer is quite simple… "tradition".

Because of our traditions, people have kept their balance for many, many years.  All over the world, we have traditions for everything... How to sleep, how to eat... how to work... how to wear clothes... how to celebrate our holidays. For instance, in Finland, many Finns visit the sauna on Christmas Eve, and it is customary to visit the gravesites of departed family members.  In England, plum pudding and caroling are traditional.   In Australia, the holiday comes in the middle of summer and it's not unusual for some parts of Australia to hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Christmas day.  During the warm and sunny Australian Christmas season, beach time and outdoor barbecues are common and traditional Christmas day celebrations include family gatherings, exchanging gifts and either a hot meal with ham, turkey, pork or seafood barbeque.  "Throw another shrimp on the bar-b will ya?"

Legend has it that at the appropriate time, Santa chooses an elf that has shown special qualities, and grooms that elf to ultimately be Santa's replacement.  Once the elf has been selected, he becomes known as "Little Claus" and spends years of rigorous training alongside Santa himself (after all, being Santa isn't an easy task, if it was, I imagine everyone might try doing it).

Working as a close knit team, Little Claus and Santa spend time visiting with people during the holidays, often visiting hospitals, orphanages, schools, even just stopping to say hello to children on the street.  You never know where they'll turn up.

After years of hard work, when it's time for Santa to retire, with a touch of Christmas magic and some special North Pole pomp and circumstance, Little Claus is elevated to the position of Santa Claus and he takes over the reigns, as well as the reins for the reindeer driven sleigh.  Sometime, decades or centuries later, that Santa Claus will pass the tradition down to a special elf and  history will repeat itself once again.
And that is how Santa lives on in perpetuity, now and forever.
